Types of Massage Therapy
Swedish Massage – the massage therapist applies long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage oil or lotion to produce a very gentle and relaxing massage for the client. Swedish massage is often recommended for someone who has never experienced professional massage.
Deep Tissue Massage – The massage therapist targets connective tissue and deeper layers of muscle and by using friction techniques and slower strokes across the grain of the muscle. Deep Tissue massage is recommended for those with chronically painful and tight muscles, postural problems, repetitive strain, or recovering from injury. It is not uncommon for a client to experience some soreness for a day or two after a deep tissue massage session.
Sports Massage – is specifically designed for individuals who engage in rigorous physical activity and place high demands on their bodies. The massage therapist uses a combination of techniques aimed at helping muscles and tissues to repair or recover faster and to maintain flexibility, thereby keeping the athlete injury-free and performing at a high level. The strokes applied are generally faster than Swedish massage and facilitated stretching is usually incorporated into the session.
Prenatal Massage - Pregnancy massage is massage therapy tailored directly to an expectant mother's needs. Learn about the short and long term benefits of prenatal massage.
Hot Stone Massage - is a deeply relaxing and therapeutic form of specialty massage therapy. For centuries, Scandinavians have heated rocks for their saunas and Native Americans as well as the Japanese have used them to alleviate pain and relieve stress. Basalt stones - a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well, are used during hot stone massage therapy. Hot Stone Massage promotes deep muscle and tissue relaxation, relieves pain, alleviates stress, releases toxins, and improves circulation. Hot stone therapy is available by appointment only.
Chair Massage – also known as Seated Massage or On-site Massage Therapy, is a technique that involves the use of a specially designed massage chair in which the client sits comfortably. Seated massage includes bodywork that incorporates aspects of Shiatsu and Swedish massage. It can be provided on-site at a variety of venues including businesses, social events, health fairs, conferences, etc. It is a relaxing, yet energizing experience.
Hydrocollator – Moist Heat Therapy experience the added benefit of moist heat therapy during your next massage! Absorbing many times their own weight in water, these packs are removed from a hot water tank, and wrapped in towels before they are applied to your back and sore muscles. Deep penetrating warmth is conducted to the tissue in your tight muscles, promoting even greater results from every session.
